Whitewashing

I have been in love with whitewashed brick for as long as I can remember. There are a few local homes in town that have it, and once I saw Paula Deen's brick backsplash, I was smitten. I just didn't know how to go about getting it. I dont think I will be able to have a brick backsplash since it seems that adding brick would be very labor intensive... but I could always transform the brick we already have.
As you can sort of see in this photo, our fireplace sticks out like a sore thumb. It stands in the middle of our living room with all its dated brick and faux brass glory. I am thinking that a white washed look would be the perfect accent and make it a nice focal point for the room...Not just an eye sore. I am hoping it would give the room a bit of history, making it look perfectly aged.
Plan A is to use a lime wash. People have used this approach for 100's of years, I just hope I can pull it off! If it is unsuccessful I will try the painted route. I have searched endlessly online for lime washing instructions, and good detailed directions are hard to come by. So I am going to take photos in case any one else is interested in doing it as well. My experiment starts tomorrow so I will let y'all know how it goes.
Wish me luck!

  3. I, too, love a white-washed brick. I always thought painting was the only option so I'm so curious to see what your experience is!
